Every 2027 Color of the Year, Reviewed by a Custom Home Builder

Six major U.S. paint brands have named their 2027 Color of the Year so far: Sherwin-Williams (with HGTV Home) chose Celery, Benjamin Moore chose Webster Green, Behr chose Grounded, Valspar chose Cottage Door, Glidden chose Artifact and Dutch Boy chose Deep Rooted. Three are greens, two are muted blues and one is an earthy orange. Pantone has not announced yet.
Trend reports tell you what a color means. We wanted to know how each one behaves in an actual new house, so we looked at every pick against the white walls, white trim and oak floors most new homes start with.
The 2027 Colors of the Year at a glance
- Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home, Celery SW 6421 (announced September 15, 2026). "A soft, muted green with subtle yellow undertones." LRV 71.
- Benjamin Moore, Webster Green HC-130 (October 14, 2026). "A confident hue with undeniable personality." LRV 20.2.
- Behr, Grounded T27-01 (August 26, 2026). "An earthy olive green" that "moves effortlessly between olive and moss, anchored by subtle brown undertones."
- Valspar, Cottage Door 8004-38E (August 5, 2026). "A reflective mid-tone neutral blue." LRV 26.
- Glidden, Artifact PPG10-16 (September 14, 2026). "A warm, smoky blue."
- Dutch Boy, Deep Rooted 311-7DB (August 25, 2026). "A rich, earthy orange inspired by warmth, comfort and optimism."
Descriptions are quoted from each brand's announcement. LRV is listed only where the brand publishes it.
How we judged them
A Color of the Year has to live with whatever else is in the room. In most new homes that means white walls and ceilings, white trim and doors, and wood floors in the main living areas. Those are the surfaces we judged each pick against.

The most useful number on a paint chip is its light reflectance value, or LRV. Valspar describes it as a measure of how much visible light a painted surface reflects, on a scale from black (0) to white (100). This year's major picks run from 71 (Celery) down to about 20 (Webster Green). The lower the number, the darker the room gets and the sharper the line where wall meets white trim.
For each color, we asked three questions: how it sits next to white trim, how it works with oak floors, and where in a new home it belongs.
Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home: Celery SW 6421
Sherwin-Williams calls Celery "a soft, muted green with subtle yellow undertones." At an LRV of 71, it is the lightest of the 2027 picks and a big step up from the brand's 2026 choice, Universal Khaki, at about 40.

Our take: This is the one you can paint a whole room in without losing light. Celery reads as color without darkening the space, and white trim gives it a soft edge rather than a hard outline. The yellow undertone leans warm, which suits white oak. Sherwin-Williams even pairs it with a light wood stain, Minwax Pickled Oak. Kitchens, bedrooms and a primary bath are all good candidates.
Benjamin Moore: Webster Green HC-130
Benjamin Moore calls Webster Green "a quintessential green that bridges timeless design with contemporary aesthetics" and says "its depth and chroma allow it to work across traditional, contemporary and transitional design styles." Its color page lists an LRV of 20.2.

Our take: Webster Green is the darkest of the six major picks and the other end of the green trend from Celery. Use Celery for whole rooms and Webster Green where a deep color earns its keep: kitchen cabinetry, a study, built-ins or a front door, which is where Benjamin Moore itself suggests putting it. Against white trim it makes a strong, traditional contrast, and dark green with oak is a classic pairing. In a small room with one window, paint a large sample before committing all four walls.
Behr: Grounded T27-01
Behr describes Grounded as "an earthy olive green" that "moves effortlessly between olive and moss, anchored by subtle brown undertones that bring the outdoors in."

Our take: Grounded is a stronger statement than Celery, and its brown undertone makes it the earthiest of the three greens. Behr's announcement doesn't give an LRV, so check the chip, and test a large sample before committing four walls to it. A kitchen island, a mudroom or a home office are natural spots, and the brown undertone sits comfortably next to wood floors and cabinetry.
Valspar: Cottage Door 8004-38E

Valspar calls Cottage Door "a reflective mid-tone neutral blue," and its color marketing director describes it as "reflective and warm." Valspar's own color page lists an LRV of 26 and tags the undertone as cool, so expect it to shift with your light.

Our take: At 26, Cottage Door is a true mid-tone. On every wall it changes the character of a room, which can be exactly right in a study or dining room and too heavy in a small bedroom with one window. Against white trim it gives a crisp, traditional contrast. It is an easy fit for cabinetry, a vanity, interior doors or a front door.
Glidden: Artifact PPG10-16
Glidden calls Artifact "a warm, smoky blue" with "a calming energy that adds to a room's character or personal style."

Our take: Muted blue is the year's second theme after green. If you like the direction, put chips of Artifact and Cottage Door side by side on your own wall, because one described as warm and one tagged cool will look different in your light. Glidden's page doesn't list an LRV, so let the sample decide how much wall it gets.
Dutch Boy: Deep Rooted 311-7DB
Dutch Boy describes Deep Rooted as "a rich, earthy orange inspired by warmth, comfort and optimism."

Our take: The boldest pick of the year, and the one to try in a small space first. A powder room, a laundry room or a front door lets you live with it without committing the main rooms. White trim gives it a clean frame; test it next to your floors, since earthy orange and oak are both warm and can compete.
Smaller brands, and what's still to come
- Dunn-Edwards, French Press Coffee DEBN07: "a deep, nuanced brown with a subtle plum undertone." Its color page lists an LRV of 6, about as dark as wall paint gets, so think front door or cabinetry rather than a whole room.
- C2 Paint, Pueblo C2-510 (October 5, 2026): C2's color specialist describes "an earthen quality with rose undertones and a brown base softened by warmth."
- Pantone: usually announces in early December. The 2026 color, Cloud Dancer, was announced on December 4, 2025.
- Minwax has not announced a 2027 pick yet.

How to use a Color of the Year in a new home
Put trends where they are easy to change. Paint is the easiest finish in a house to redo. Tile, countertops and flooring are not. If you love this year's color, put it on walls, doors, an island or a vanity, and keep the harder-to-change finishes neutral.
Keep one trim color throughout. One white for trim and doors is what ties a house together when every room is a different color. Changing the walls is simple; changing the trim room by room rarely looks intentional.
Test in your own light. A chip under store lighting tells you very little. Paint large samples on more than one wall and look at them morning and evening. A north-facing room and a west-facing room will not show the same color.
Use your design meetings. Every home we build on your lot includes three one-on-one meetings with our in-house interior designer, with design boards. That is the time to try a Color of the Year against your actual cabinets, counters and floors before anything goes on the wall.
